Premium Hardwood Doors

What is a door? A door is an invitation to the warmth guests can feel as they enter and a sign of security to those inside. A comparison of the door beneath the surface is provided by scrolling down- compare what is behind the scenes from the door that this one replaced.

Beautiful

Enhanced security- Compared to builder grade doors, custom made doors have hinges mortised into the framing of the house as well as into the door itself and is inaccessible when closed.

Quieter operation

Reduced sound transmission

Solid- Builder grade doors are largely hollow and filled with a honeycomb cardboard like material.

Anatomy of a door

Following an install, I removed the existing hollow core door and cut it in half to demonstrate the difference. The majority of a hollow core door is empty space. This is another illustration of why I cannot match factory prices- we are simply building for different reasons and with different quality materials. Which construction looks like it would better repel an intruder, dampen sound, hold up over time, and increase the value of the home?

Side by side of the veritcal rail of the door I built and the door it was replacing. Even the 1/4" thick strips of walnut I put on the face of the door was almost 2x as thick as the cardboard like material of the door it replaced. The door framing I used is a minimum of 1 3/8" thick and the panels I use (not pictured) are a minimum 3/4" thick hardwood- in the case of this door it was walnut and hard maple.

Coming in at just under 1/8" thick on either side, the hollow core door has a few styrofoam spacers and some strips at the edges that look like compressed and glued wood fibers. Think about the security from this in a child's room to the security of a door that is solid through.

While it does take longer, the door I built is solid wood all the way through. These vertical pieces are joined in several steps, with varying grain, to ensure a very stable, and very solid door over many years.

The base of the hollow core door featured some additional styrofoam offsets but remained mostly empty space.

Storage doors

To improve the look of the room, I made these doors for storage shelves. The door framing is poplar with hard maple panels and finished with a zero VOC hard wax oil.
